My research is based on fieldwork in Ramallah, the administrative capital of Palestine, and the center for political and economic change since the signing of the Oslo accords in 1993. My main interest is the negotiation of confinement under occupation and cosmopolitan aspirations among middle-class youth in the area. The crossing of borders for young Palestinians, whether into adulthood, through a local checkpoint, or the desire to migrate is of central importance to imagining the future. The possibility to overcome a bordered life of stuckedness and waithood is unevenly distributed in a city where social and spatial mobility is intimately linked through elaborate permit schemes and diasporic networks. Through a focus on youth in Ramallah I aim to highlight the inner tensions in West Bank Palestine (generational, classed, gendered) and the many different visions of self and space in a highly contested spatial context.
