High ability, giftedness and learning: theories and methods in gifted education and research, (UQ012FU) 7,5 credits

PhD Course in the Doctoral programme: Educational provisions for gifted/highly able students in inclusive educational systems: Gifted education doctoral programme for teacher educators (the course is given in collaboration with KAU and MDH HT 2022).

Contents

The course gives the student a comprehensive overview of theories on cognitive abilities, giftedness, ability development and learning of relevance for education and teaching, including possible misconceptions and challenges. The contents include history of giftedness, international perspectives, theories of intelligence, academic talent development, motivation, expertise, creativity.

The course introduces research methodologies that can be used in the field of gifted education research. 

Theoretical models apply to a chosen biographic content with the methodology of narrative analysis and/or thematic analysis.

Relevant theoretically and empirically supported contents and themes are identified, described and summarized which are suitable to be included in teacher education and /or special educator education, or to be presented to other audience (for example: students, school health teams, parents, general public, policy makers, surrounding society). 

Course is given: Autumn 22 (25 %) 

 

Activities

The course's activities will be partly web based, but they include one or more on-site meetings. The course consists of four modules: 

  • module with literature seminars on theories and methods; 
  • module with narrative analysis of biography;
  • module with live lectures or video-recorded lectures and discussions; 
  • module with development of teaching material to be used in teacher education or other contexts;

The participation to scheduled lectures or seminars is mandatory.

Learning outcomes

  • Attain knowledge on theories on cognitive abilities, giftedness, ability development and learning, of relevance for education and teaching.
  • Reflect on various methodological alternatives and relate them to appropriate empirical research questions.
  • Identify theoretical models and apply appropriate methods to narrative data, making interpretations and hypothesis.
  • Identify issues, challenges, stereotypes, objections that may hinder attainment and development in gifted education in the educational context. 
  • Summarize core contents on giftedness, ability development and learning, that are appropriate to be included in teacher education and /or special educator education.

Eligibility: Admitted to a PhD program. PhD students admitted to the Educational provisions for gifted/highly able students in inclusive educational systems (Gifted education doctoral programme for teacher educators) have priority.
