Scientific management support

An overarching aim with all our research activities is to support a better management of the Baltic Sea environment. We participate as experts in different management processes, we make prioritized analyses and syntheses, and we provide technical support.

At the Baltic Sea Centre, research supporting marine governance is conducted. The contributions vary from shorter consultations to larger projects.

We work to increase knowledge of important processes in the coastal area, assess how the environmental condition develops and evaluate the effectiveness of various measures.

Making analyzes and syntheses on all scales, from individual bays in the Stockholm archipelago and up to the entire Baltic Sea scale, models of various kinds are often an important foundation. They are used, among other things, to assist others who work with managing the marine environment with decision-making material.

Support for the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM)

The research group Baltic Nest Institute Sweden (BNI), with the Nest system, assists The Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission, also known as the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM), with scientific data and calculations of emission ceilings for nitrogen and phosphorus within the HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan.

HELCOM is the main receiver of research support from the Baltic Nest Institute. But our researchers also provide support for national and regional stakeholders.

Our measures to develop and monitor the scientific basis for Helcom's Nutrient Reduction Scheme is a corner stone in our support to Helcom. It includes software development and the development of other assessment tools. Our support also includes the updating of Helcom's efforts against hazardous substances and we are hosting and developing the Helcom Pollution Load Compilation data base (PLC), which contains data on the pollution load from all Baltic Sea countries.

We are often invited to different expert groups within the Helcom structure and on some occations we represent Sweden in Helcom's expert groups.

Baltic Nest Institute management support and marine modelling

Pollution Load Compilations (PLC) have been an integral part of The Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (HELCOM) assessments since 1987, focusing on annual and periodic assessments of inputs of nutrients and selected hazardous substances. PLC-8 provides assessments of nutrient and contaminant inputs to the Baltic Sea.
