As a student you can easily see your course(s) schedule by login with your university account. Please note that the schedule is preliminary and is subject to change. When you are logged in, click on "My assembled schedule".

IT for students

The department applies several different examination forms. Below you will find a summary of these. Information on a particular module's examination form is always described in the current course description and in the syllabus which you will find in Athena.

The most common examination forms are:

Written examination (Salstentamen)

You need to register for a written exam in advance. You do this in Ladok for students.  Choose the course and "Register for the exam".

Note that you always must bring a valid ID card to written exams.

Oral examination (Muntlig tentamen)

Some modules in courses have an oral examination as part of the examination. You also need to register for the oral examination, in the same way as for a written examination.

Take-home examination (Hemtentamen)

You do not need to register for a take-home examination. All take-home exams are downloaded at Athena or Exia, and must then also be submitted there, at the appointed time. See the course description or ask your teacher for the applicable platform.

Make sure to read the instructions for submission carefully so that no unnecessary mistakes occur. When submitting a take-home examination, you should always receive an automatically generated reply email to your webmail confirming the submission.

Written assignment (Inlämningsuppgift)

Written assignments work to a large extent as a take-home examination. The difference that you often have significantly longer time to write and the questions you will answer are often more open than the ones in the take-home exam. Submissions are made, in the same way as for take-home exams, via Athena.

Grading system

Grades are set for each module after completion of all examinations. To obtain a final grade on an entire course, a minimum grade of E is required on all modules with a seven-point scale, and a grade G on courses with a two-point scale.

The letter grades A-E are converted to the numbers 5-1 and are summed up to an average grade where you also weigh in the number of credits that each module comprises of in the total number of course credits. The grade for the entire course is thus set by a weighted average of the modules. Common rounding rules are applied. The principles for how this is done is specified in the course syllabus.

The department has produced a short series of formalia that is intended to serve as support during your studies. You can collect a printed version of the formalia series at the Student Office.

The Student Councils are open for all students at Stockholm University and are created and run by students at Stockholm University covering wide range of interests. They are involved in decision-making and deliberation that have an impact on the education or the students’ situation.

At every department, there is a student council where you can get involved and pursue agendas relevant to your education. As a student at our department you are also a member of the Student Council SAMS (Studentråd för Asien- och Mellanösternstudier).

The Student Council (SAMS) covers and plays an active part in the Department’s work and also has representatives on the Department’s Board.

The Academic Writing Service provides English-language support for writing and study skills. We give talks and seminars and offer individual guidance. Our services are available free of charge to all students at Stockholm University.

Språkstudion is the place for you who studies, teaches, does research or is interested in other aspects of languages at Stockholm University. They offer material, media tools and environments for language practise, teaching, analysis, exams, recordings and other areas of language and linguistics.

Språkstudion also organises Language Cafe sessions where you get the opportunity to practise languages in an informal setting, together with other students and native speakers.

Stockholm University Library is an important resource for students. Here you can borrow and order course literature. The library also gives you access to scientific literature, journals and databases, in printed as well as digital format.

At the Libary there are experts who can teach you how to search, select and critically exam scientific resources for your essay or thesis. They also offer advice on how to write and manage references.

Accessibility at Kräftriket

Unfortunately, our building is not wheelchair accessible and lacks elevators. The building is outfitted with two stairlifts, however, the second is a chairlift and requires the user to transfer from their wheelchair to the chairlift. If you use a wheelchair or for any reason need to use the stairlifts, please contact the The Student Councelor at the department.

Stockholm University's general study and career counsellors are based in Studenthuset at the Frescati campus and can help you with information about studying at Stockholm University, such as programmes and courses available and eligibility requirements.

Stockholm University also has a career portal where you can be updated on relevant internships, jobs and find information on career events at Stockholm University.

In Studenthuset at Frescati you can find several units for student service, for instance study and career counselling, the Academic Writing Service, support for students with disabilities and the Admissions Office.

On the first floor you find the Student Services’ reception Infocenter. For international students the infocenter can be especially helpful during their first arrival days or weeks, for guidance concerning activation of university account, finding their way on campus etc. You can ask our Infocenter staff about anything concerning your studies, such as admissions, degrees and student support.
