DEEP is looking for a Researcher in Herring population genetics

Stockholm University is recruiting a researcher in herring population genetics to support marine biodiversity and sustainable fisheries.

The Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences (DEEP) at Stockholm University is offering a one-year research position focused on the population genetics of the Baltic Sea herring. The role is part of a larger multidisciplinary effort to understand how herring spawning stocks adapt to environmental changes—especially shifts in plankton and temperature patterns—and how this affects their long-term survival.
Working with Professors Monika Winder and Henrik Svedäng, the successful candidate will analyze SNP data from larval herring collected across multiple seasons and years. The goal is to map population structure and assess how environmental pressures influence genetic diversity.

Applicants should have a PhD and strong experience in bioinformatics, population genomics, and statistical analysis. A background in ecology or fisheries biology is a plus, as is lab experience with DNA extraction and genomic libraries.

The position begins September 1, 2025 or after agreement. Applications are open until July 3.
