New knowledge on how education is developing in the Asia-Pacific region

Once in a while a comprehensive collection of readings is published internationally. Such is "The Springer International Handbook of Educational Development in Asia-Pacific" edited by Wing On Lee, Phillip Brown, A. Lin Goodwin, and Andy Green.

Book cover

The Handbook contains 13 sections and 129 chapters, covering a wide spectrum of areas, including equity and quality in education, language education, learning and human development, lifelong learning, employability and labor markets, workplace learning and job-skill changes, teacher education and professionalization, higher education development, globalization, citizenship and moral education, and the performance of Asia-Pacific students in international achievement tests.

With its internationally renowned authors, the Handbook offers academic discourse and analyses that have worldwide implications, but are offered from Asian perspectives, and examined within Asian contexts. The 127 chapters provide food-for-thought on where educational development is heading in the global South-East, and offer a resource for anyone focusing on research in the region.

Meeri Hellsten and Brian D. Denham are authors of the chapter:
Comparing Equity and Quality Education in the Asia Pacific

This chapter examines the connection between equity and quality education by comparing recently published research outputs. It suggests that despite many efforts towards a standard approach, issues remain, with many nation-states balancing policies that are equity-focused against those that prioritize personalized, high-quality education. By assessing psychological and sociological aspects within a modified cartographic framework, the chapter aims to question some assumptions and shed light on the intricate nature of developing both equity and quality in education.

Denman is the Lead Editor of the Handbook's section 13, with 10 thematic chapters.
