Title:

Tissue homeostatis of human NK cells

Host:

Johan Ankarklev, MBW, Stockholm University

Abstract

This seminar will explore recent advances in understanding tissue-specific immunity, with a focus on the role and behavior of natural killer (NK) cells across various human tissues. Findings on the distinct residency and recirculation patterns of CD56bright NK cells in the liver and uterus will be discussed, including insights from humanized models and transplantation studies. Key topics include the mechanisms underlying immune cell reconstitution in transplanted tissues, observed in both liver and uterine transplants. Furthermore, through comparative studies, the balance of genetic versus environmental influences on immune cell variability, as seen in uterine tissues of monozygotic twins has been examined. Additionally, the differentiation pathways of uterine NK cells will be addressed, highlighting how these cells respond to signals like IL-15 during endometrial regeneration and pregnancy, with implications for their immunomodulatory and angiogenic functions. In summary, adaptive processes governing tissue-specific immunity will be covered, shedding light on the intricate balance between genetic, environmental, and regenerative factors. These insights have implications for advancing our understanding of immune homeostasis in dynamic tissue environments.
