Seminar with Vera Leier, senior lecturer in German, with the title "Social presence in online language learning promotes/sparks spoken interaction and engagement".
Abstract: Social presence in online language learning promotes/sparks spoken interaction and engagement
Social presence is a construct derived from communication theory (Short, J.A., Williams, E., & Christie, B., 1976). It is a key component of the community of inquiry framework (Garrison et al., 2000) and became particularly relevant as computer-mediated teaching and learning grew in importance within educational settings. Social presence, with its various categories, is a valuable tool for designing and studying online classes. In my presentation, I will first discuss the concept of social presence and its origins, followed by definitions and an explanation of how it contributes to the community of inquiry framework. I will conclude with examples from my own research.
The seminar will be in English. Please contact Hanna Henryson (hanna.henryson@tyska.su.se) for more information and for the Zoom link (when applicable)!
