Abstract
In the National Library of Sweden (Kungliga Biblioteket) in Stockholm one can find the little-know manuscript Pater noſter: Varijs Linguis ‘Lord’s Prayer: in various languages’. It dates from the 16th century and is attributed to Georg Bruno. It is a collection of the Lord’s Prayer in 20 languages: Hebrew, Greek, Latin, German, Arabic, Armenian, Tatar, Turkish, Slavic, Syriac, Latvian, Finnish, English, Danish, Swedish, French, Spanish, Italian, Czech, and Saami.
This presentation will discuss the manuscript, focusing mainly on the Latvian prayer, but also mentioning other prayers, especially Finnish and Saami, which are hitherto unknown to scholars, but will soon be the subject of new research. The discussion of the Latvian prayer will also cover the broader context of other 16th century prayer publications.
