About the department
Welcome to the Department of Swedish Language and Multilingualism!
At the department we do research on and teach the subjects Bilingualism, Scandinavian languages, Swedish, Swedish as a foreign language, Swedish as a second language, and Translation studies (interpreting and translation). We also give Tisus (Test in Swedish for university and college studies).
We do research on bilingualism and multilingualism and provide courses at basic level, advanced level and postgraduate level. Second language and bilingualism is one of Stockholm University's leading research areas.
Institute for Interpreting and Translation Studies (TÖI)
We do research on and teach about translation and interpretation in a multilingual society. We train interpreters and translators to meet Sweden’s needs, by direct commission from the government.
Swedish and Scandinavian Languages
We do research on and teach about Swedish in the past as well as in our time, and we also teach Danish and Norwegian.
Swedish as a Foreign Language
We provide language skills training courses in Swedish as a foreign language, for second language speakers, for international students and employees at SU. We also provide Tisus.
Tisus
Tisus is a test in Swedish for university studies regarding Swedish language proficiency. It is given twice a year in Sweden and abroad.
