Work experience and Projects on assignment

Work experience courses and projects on assignment can give your education a more applied profile and better preparation for the labor market.

Work experience courses

Work experience courses provide the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills from more theoretical courses and provide insight into working life. Through work experience, your transition from university education to professional life will be easier.

A work experience course is studied towards the end of the program. Most commonly, a work experience course is studied independently after the bachelor's degree or within a master's programme. Work experience abroad can sometimes be done as an Erasmus internship. A work experience course can be part of the Bachelor's or Master's degree.

All work experience courses in the Department of Human Geography are 15 credits. This means that the internship is almost 10 weeks long. The work experience courses are given full-time in the autumn and spring semesters during the semester parts A-B (period 1) and C-D (period 2). A work experience course can be followed by an assignment project course at the same workplace, which makes it possible to apply for internships at workplaces that want trainees for 20 weeks (a total of 30 credits).

If you are studying at first cycle level, you apply for a work experience course in the same way as other courses, i.e. on antagning.se.

Courses at first cycle level:

Work Experience in Human Geography, 15 credits
Work Experience in Urban and Regional Planning, 15 credits

If you are studying on one of the department's three master's programmes, you can choose to take a work experience course at the first cycle level or at the advanced level. The work experience courses at the advanced level are only given to students admitted to one of the department's master's programmes and you register with the department's student office.

Courses at advanced level (only given within master's programmes):

Work Experience in Human Geography, 15 credits
Work Experience in Urban and Regional Planning, 15 credits

The student is responsible for finding a placement with a strong connection to the main field of study. Before the course can begin, the placement must be approved by the Department. The course begins with an introduction for all students who will do the course the same semester period.

Once you have found a placement, email a brief description of the workplace, the expected tasks and the name and email of the contact person to the course coordinator. In addition to this, you must of course meet the eligibility requirements of the course. If you have questions about eligibility, please contact the student office.

Examples of companies, municipalities, government agencies and non-profit organizations that have received trainees:

  • Stockholm County Administrative Board
  • Swedish Environmental Protection Agency
  • Ramboll
  • Region Skåne
  • City of Stockholm
  • Swedish municipalities and regions
  • Municipality of Södertälje
  • Swedish Transport Administration
  • Municipality of Trelleborg
  • Tyréns
  • WSP
  • World Wildlife Fund WWF Sweden

Internship opportunities are advertised on the department's LinkedIn. You can also search for internships on MyCareer, via other placement services, such as Sustainergies, and directly on the websites and social platforms of the desired internships.

During the first half of the spring semester (semester parts A-B), the department collaborates with the Stockholm County Administrative Board to offer a number of internships with public employers in the Stockholm region. Information on how to apply will be sent to all those who have applied for the work experience course at undergraduate level for the period in question. If you are studying on one of the department's master's programmes, you will receive information on Athena.

During the work experience course, you will participate in two compulsory seminars, both of which are given digitally to enable you to do your internship across the country and abroad. The course starts with an introductory seminar and ends with a final seminar.

You will write an internship diary. At the end of the internship, the work experience course is examined by you orally and in writing summarizing and reflecting on your experiences from the internship and learning from the experiences of others. At the advanced level, higher demands are placed on, among other things, your own reflection.

Projects on assignment

Project assignment courses are similar in many ways to work experience courses as they also involve the application of theoretical knowledge and skills and contact with working life. The work task is usually more demanding but there are also other important differences.

The assignment project consists of a slightly larger project, similar to an independent thesis, with the difference that it is an applied work done on behalf of an organization. Usually the project is carried out individually, but it is sometimes also possible to work in a small group.

All the Department of Human Geography's independent project on assignment courses comprise 15 credits. This means that the project period is about 10 weeks long. The courses are given full time in the autumn and spring semesters during semester parts A-B (period 1) and C-D (period 2). A project assignment course can be done directly after a work experience course at the same workplace. This makes it possible to apply for internships at workplaces that want interns (or degree workers) for 20 weeks (30 credits).

A project on assignment is included in the final semester of the Bachelor's programme in Human Geography - Society, Environment and Global Processes, 180 credits. A project on assignment course can also be studied independently after the bachelor's degree, as a bridge to the labour market, or within a master's programme. A project on assignment course can be included in a bachelor's or master's degree.

If you are studying at first cycle level, you apply for a project course in the same way as for other courses, i.e. via antagning.se.

Courses at first cycle level:

Project on Assignment in Human Geography, 15 credits
Project on Assignment in Urban and Regional Planning, 15 credits

If you are studying on one of the department's three master's programmes, you can choose to take a project on assignment course at the first or second cycle. The project on assignment courses at the second cycle are only given to students admitted to one of the department's master's programmes and you register with the department's student administration.

Second-cycle courses (given only within master's programmes):

Project on Assignment in Human Geography, 15 credits
Project on Assignment in Urban and Regional Planning, 15 credits
Project work in Geography, 15 credits

The assignment can come from companies, municipalities, government agencies and non-profit organizations. As a student on the course, you are responsible for finding an assignment with clear relevance to your education. Before the project on assignment can begin, the assignment must be approved by the course coordinator. When you have found a client, email a short description of the client, the intended assignment and the contact person's name and email to the course coordinator. In addition to this, you must of course meet the course's eligibility requirements. If you have questions about eligibility, please contact the student office.

Examples of previous companies, municipalities, government agencies and non-profit organizations are:

  • Dramaten
  • Kulturhuset Stadsteatern
  • Stockholm County Administrative Board
  • The Swedish Agency for Higher Vocational Education
  • Nacka municipality
  • The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation
  • Skanska
  • City of Stockholm
  • Church of Sweden
  • Swedish Construction Federation
  • Värmdö municipality
  • ZeroMission

Internship opportunities are advertised on the department's LinkedIn. You can also search for internships on MyCareer, via other placement services, such as Sustainergies, and directly on the websites and social platforms of the desired internships.

During the project on assignment course, you will participate in two compulsory seminars, both of which are delivered online. The course starts with an introductory seminar and ends with a final seminar.

During the course, you will have one or more contact persons at the client. Often the client gives access to some type of material that is included in the study that is done, but of course it depends on the theme of the project.

When the project on assignment is completed, the course is examined by presenting the project. The presentation is done in writing in the form of a report and orally through presentation at the client and at the final seminar of the course.

Unlike a work experience course, which gives a grade of G or U, the regular grading scale is used for a project course, i.e. A-F.
