Sociolinguistic Perspectives on Multilingualism

The course aims to provide advanced and broad interdisciplinary knowledge in multilingualism research by, among other things, examining its historical development and contemporary approaches to studying issues related to language and politics, power, inequality, and diversity in globalized multilingual contexts.

It introduces theoretical and methodological tools for critically analyzing and interpreting the social
meanings of multilingualism in institutional, private, and public settings, as well as across different
semiotic modalities and resources. By focusing on concepts such as language ideologies, code-switching, translanguaging practices, repertoires, reflexivity, performance, and indexicality, the course allows students to further develop research skills in assessing and critiquing scholarship.

This course is a part of Master's Programme in Multilingualism and Second Language Acquisition. You can also apply for the course as a free standing course.
