Advanced Course in Public International Law

The Advanced Course in Public International Law aims to provide advanced knowledge of core issues and fundamental principles of public international law and to familiarise students with recent trends.

The Advanced Course in Public International Law is given as an elective course within the framework of the exchange programmes at the Department of Law, Stockholm University. Swedish law students admitted by the department are also given access to the course.

The foundations of public international law are studied initially, such as theory, its subjects, sources of law and interpretation, relationship between national and international law, state responsibility,
jurisdiction and immunity. The course also includes an introduction to and in- depth studies of
some of the different specialised regulations/topics of public international law such as international law of the sea, the prohibition on the use of force, international humanitarian law, the foundations of human rights, international environment law and international criminal law.

The learning objectives, activities, and examination criteria for the course are outlined in the syllabus. Therefore, the syllabus serves as the foundational document dictating the course's content and structure.

Teaching Format

The course starts with an introductory lecture, the aim of which is to provide general orientation within the subject area. After this, teaching is conducted through lectures and seminars. Participation in the introduction and seminars is mandatory.

Assessment

The course's learning outcomes are assessed through the individual essay, active participation during the seminars, and a written examination.

The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.
Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.
