Language Evolution and Child Language Acquisition

This is a Master’s level course in Linguistics focusing on language evolution in our human species as well as the process of language acquisition by individuals.

This course provides up-to-date insights into the emergence of human language. We look at language evolution in our human species as well as the process of language acquisition by individuals, with a focus on the latter. 

We explore a number of explanatory models that have been proposed to account for the phenomena under study, and use these as a lens to review and problematise the current state of knowledge about child language acquisition.

The course is given as part of the Master’s Programme in Child Language Acquisition, but it can also be taken as an independent unit.



Teaching Format

Lectures, group discussions and presentations. Teaching is given in English.


Assessment

The course is examined through written assignments and presentations.
