Introduction to Research Methods in Language Teaching and Learning

This course covers research methods and research ethics in the field of language teaching and learning, with a focus on quality, rigor and methodological choices in relation to theoretical frameworks. The course is given in English.

The course content is divided into three areas:

  • A method overview that covers research design, data collection, analysis and ethical and reflexive aspects, including data storage and research ethics guidelines.
  • Qualitative and quantitative methods, such as interviews, observations, statistical analyses, thematic analysis and discourse analysis.
  • Mixed methods and how they can be integrated.

These three areas include an individual in-depth study within a language teaching and learning sub-area.

Once the course is in progress, the web-based learning platform Canvas will be used for communication, learning activities and course assignments.

Teaching Format

The teaching consists of lectures and seminars. Participation in the teaching is mandatory and a prerequisite for examination in the course.

The teaching is done remotely or on campus as specified for each course opportunity.

Assessment

The course is examined through individual written and oral analysis and presentation tasks.

The examination may be in English.

Examiner

The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.
Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.
