Emil Marklund named Research Leader of the Future

Emil Marklund at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at Stockholm University has been named one of the future research leaders by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research. The award includes a research grant of SEK 15 million and leadership training.

"This funding will be crucial for us to pursue groundbreaking research in molecular recognition among biological macromolecules. I am also thrilled to participate in this prestigious, long-running leadership program, which has fostered some of Sweden’s most prominent researchers", says Emil Marklund.

The project "High-throughput biochemistry in protein sequence space" will investigate how the amino acid sequence of proteins govern binding and other molecular functions, by quantitatively analyzing many protein sequence mutants in parallel. This research will elucidate why certain proteins bind effectively while others do not.

"The goal is that our approach can be applied to develop improved protein-based therapeutics for disease treatment", says Emil Marklund.

The prize is awarded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF), which supports research in science, technology, and medicine. According to SSF, the research that receives funding must be of the highest quality and also be applicable to Swedish industry and society in general.

"I feel very honored to receive this grant and want to give a big shout-out to my amazing team, whose hard work made this achievement possible", says Emil Marklund.
