Million Funding for SU Researchers to Share Sustainability Research
Researchers at Stockholm University have been awarded funding in Formas' 2024 Communication Call for projects aimed at disseminating research on sustainable development.
The following researchers have been granted funding:
Linda Laikre, professor at the Department of Zoology, receives 1,793,419 SEK for the project "Conservation of Genetic Diversity: From Knowledge to Action in Livestock Breeding for Increased Resilience." Laikre's research focuses on micro-evolutionary processes affecting the loss of genetic diversity, particularly how human activities influence these processes and what can be done to ensure the long-term survival of populations by preserving genetic biodiversity.

Marlene Ågerstrand, senior lecturer at the Department of Environmental Science, has been granted 2,000,000 SEK for the project "Plastics, Chemicals, and Environmental Pollution: How Science Can Inform Global Policy and Lead Us to a Healthier Planet." Ågerstrand’s research focuses on the interaction between science and policy in chemical risk assessment and management.
Additionally, Marika Haeggman at Albaeco has been awarded 1,994,176 SEK for the project "A Call from Raja Ampat – The Last Chance for Coral Reefs," in which Per Olsson, Deputy Head of Research at the Stockholm Resilience Centre (SRC), is involved. Olsson has extensive experience in researching coral reef ecology, social dynamics, and conservation. His work has specifically focused on how institutional entrepreneurs contribute to coordinated actions for protecting marine ecosystems across national borders. Through studies of the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI), he has highlighted how international actors play a crucial role in preserving coral reefs in Indonesia and Raja Ampat.
"Funding A Call from Raja Ampat gives us a unique opportunity to bring together science, film and music to promote and support, together with local stakeholders, coral reef conservation projects in one of the world's most biodiverse places", says Per Olsson.
Formas' Communication Call aims to support projects that popularize research and create societal benefits through science communication.
