Every year the analytics company Clarivate publishes a list of highly cited researchers. The listed researchers have authored papers which rank in the top 1 per cent in terms of citations within their respective fields. The ranking is based on an analysis of publications and citations in scientific journals over a period of eleven years (2013–2023). As a basis, Clarivate uses the Web of Science database. However, citation activity is not the sole selection indicator. A preliminary list based on citation activity is then refined using qualitative analysis and expert judgement.

Seven researchers from Stockholm University on the list

Five of the most cited researchers 2024 are affiliated with Stockholm Resilience Centre. They are Sarah Cornell, Thomas Elmqvist and Carl Folke as well as Max Troell and Johan Rockström, the latter two primarily affiliated with the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and University of Potsdam respectively.

Two additional researchers from Stockholm University on the list of most cited are Ian Cousins, Department of Environmental Chemistry, and Gustaf Hugelius, Department of Physical Geography.

In total, 58 researchers from Swedish universities are among the world’s 6,886 most cited researchers 2024.
