Since 2003, the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai ranking, presents an annual ranking of the world’s 1 000 top research universities. This year’s ranking is topped by three American universities: Harvard, Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Karolinska Institutet is ranked first among Swedish universities, at place 50. Uppsala University is ranked second at place 93. Stockholm University ranks 100 in the world, and gets the third place among Sweden’s higher education institutions.
ARWU measures the quality of research, including indicators such as the number of alumni and employed researchers who have won Nobel Prizes, the number of “highly cited” researchers and the number of articles published in the journals Nature and Science. In total, more than 2 500 universities are ranked and only the best 1000 are published.
