About me

I have been employed as a project manager at the National Chemistry Teachers' Resource Center (KRC) since 2016. Since August 2023, I have been working full-time. My employment at KRC began already in 2016 when I shared my position there with my work as a high school teacher in chemistry and mathematics at Kungsholmen's high school in Stockholm.

In part of my position, I am the editor of Kemilärarna's Informationsbrev – a magazine published by KRC 1-2 times a year. If you are interested in publishing something related to elementary or high school chemistry education, please contact me.

I am the course leader for the course UM4055 On chemical safety in school teaching, which gives 7.5 credits. The course is offered every year in October-April and can be applied for via antagningen.se.

I am also involved on a non-profit basis in the youth competition Chemistry Olympiad. I am a member of the Swedish Chemistry Olympiad Committee, which is connected to the Swedish Chemical Society.

  • Didactic Reasoning about Using Chemicals in Teaching Upper Secondary Chemistry

2023. Jenny Olander (et al.). Journal of Chemical Education 100 (1), 45-52

    Article

Chemicals are characteristic of chemistry education practices at all educational levels. The aim of this study is to explore teachers‘ didactic rationales when reasoning about the use of chemicals in their teaching practice. Experienced upper secondary chemistry teachers in Sweden were interviewed about their considerations regarding why, when, and how they use (or do not use) chemicals, in particular, hazardous chemicals. A qualitative content analysis was conducted. The results reveal that the teachers’ reasoning about their uses of chemicals is multifaceted and draws on student learning, teacher perspectives, traditions, and practical conditions. The results may be used to support teachers’ didactic analysis when planning practical work in chemistry education, both in preservice teacher education and continuous professional development.
