About me

Helena Berglund is Senior lecturer at the Department of Political Science.

Teaching

Teaching has been part of my work at this department since the early 1990s. It has more or less mirrored my research interests on democratisation and civil society, with a strong emphasis on gender studies and the role of ethnicity and religion. Most of this has been conducted within the subject of political science but also the BA program in Development Studies as well as the Teacher’s Program in Social Science. In recent years I have concentrated my work on supervising students in their independent research papers.

Research

My research was previously focused on India, primarily on the issues of democratisation, political identities and civil society. This resulted in the monograph “Hindu Nationalism and Democracy”, the anthologies “Gender, Religion and Democracy” and “Development and Regional Cooperation in Central Asia and South Asia: Euro-Asian Perspectives” as well as several peer-reviewed articles. In recent years I have shifted focus thematically to cover the struggle for LGBT-rights, primarily in South-East Asia, but also in a Swedish context. Currently running is the cooperation with primarily Indonesian and Vietnamese civil society groups: “Transgender in Asia”.
