Linnéa Saaranen

About me

I am a Ph.D. student in Gender Studies at the Graduate School GENHDI (The Graduate School in Gender, Humanities and Digital Cultures) since autumn 2023. In my Ph.D. project, I will study and analyze visual works by contemporary Japanese female film directors and artists, mainly works by the artist Mariko Mori, from a feminist and posthumanist perspective.

Before starting my Ph.D., I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Cultural Studies (University of Gothenburg), a Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies (University of Gothenburg), and a Master of Arts in Film Studies (University of Gothenburg). In my previous research, the main focus has often been the representation of the body in visual cultures. As an example, I have written about the figuration of artificial women in science fiction films.

My academic interests include Feminist Film Theory, Cultural Analysis, Posthumanist Theory, and Japanese Film and Art.

Supervisors are Lisa Käll (Stockholm University) and Malena Gustavsson (Stockholm University).

The Research School Gender, Humanities and Digital Culture

The Research School Gender, Humanities and Digital Culture, which is partly funded by the Swedish Research Council, is a collaboration between the gender studies units at Stockholm University, Uppsala University and Södertörn University. A total of nine doctoral students are included, all of whom were admitted in the fall of 2023.

Body, Space, and Time in Japanese Visual Cultures During the New Digital Age

The new digital age that took off in the 1990s has created more opportunities for filmmakers and artists to visualize new imaginary futures and to raise questions about human embodiment and gender norms in a highly technological society.
