Group AML Karlson

Group AML Karlson studies Food web and Ecosystem ecology, Ecotoxicology and Stress ecology, Environmental monitoring and Stable isotope techniques.

CoastClim – Centre for Coastal Ecosystem and Climate Change Research

CoastClim is an interdisciplinary consortium of researchers and advanced research infrastructure that facilitates addresing questions regarding the links between coastal biodiversity and our climate. It brings together expertise in modelling, marine ecology, biogeochemistry and atmospheric research as well as policy analysis and communication from Stockholm University and University of Helsinki.

About me

I am a marine biologist from Dresden, Germany. During my bachelor's studies in biology at the Humboldt University of Berlin, I gained practical experiences in terrestrial and marine ecology, animal- and neurophysiology, as well as aquatic sciences. My bachelor's thesis investigated the behaviour and physiology of weakly electric fish. At Kiel University, I focused on marine ecology and joined the international research program “GAME” (Global Approach my Modular Experiment), where we studied the effects of artificial light at night on benthic grazers such as snails and sea urchins.

Recently, in February 2024, I joined DEEP for my PhD studies in Dr. Agnes Karlsson’s lab.

During my PhD, I will combine marine bioacoustics, bioenergetics, as well as stable isotope and mercury analysis to study fish-mediated carbon, nutrient and contaminant cycling in a warming Baltic Sea.

Currently, I am collaborating with Julia Muchowski and John Taylor to investigate the consequences of local jellyfish blooms for fish. For this, we analyse broadband acoustic data collected with R/V Electra.
