About me
I am an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Asian, Middle Eastern and Turkish Studies at Stockholm University. I hold PhD, MA and BA degrees from Copenhagen University, and my specialism is Arab media and culture.
I have 20 years of experience as a leading academic at various European universities in the UK, Sweden, and Denmark. In terms of research, I have a solid research track record of ten books, dealing with contemporary Arab media and culture. Three of my books were translated into Arabic, contributing to the debate in the region, and several publications have been chosen as readings for courses about Arab media and culture in leading institutions around the world. I have led international teams to produce several edited volumes with contributions from scholars in Europe, North America, Australia, and the Middle East.
I served as Academic Adviser at the Freedom House, and I provided written evidence to the UK Parliament; and briefed several organisations including the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, Home Office, OFCOM, US Naval Academy, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oxford Analytica, and the Middle East Broadcasting Networks (part of the US Agency for Global Media).
I have served as a reviewer of scholarly articles for 20+ peer-reviewed journals, a reviewer of book manuscripts for 12+ leading publishing houses, and a member of academic promotion panels in universities in the USA, Ireland, UK, Canada, and the Middle East. I have also served as PhD external examiner at 16 different British universities and have supervised to completion 10 PhD students in the UK.
I hold several external roles including serving as an Associate Editor of the British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies (since 2016), and a member of the editorial boards of the International Journal of Press/Politics, Journalism Studies, Arab Media & Society, and Journal of Arab and Muslim Media Research. I also serve as a Member of the Peer Review College of the Arts & Humanities Research Council (2014-2025), and the UK Research & Innovations Leadership Fellowship Scheme (since 2018). Previously, I served as a board member of the British Society of Middle Eastern Studies (BRISMES) for six years (2013-2019).
