About me

Phyllis Boumans holds a PhD in Irish Literature from the University of Leuven with a focus on the relation between (the canonisation of) short fiction in Ireland and mid-twentieth-century Irish periodical culture. She is a member of the Leuven Centre for Irish Studies and has previously published in journals such as Irish University Review, Irish Studies Review, Review of Irish Studies in Europe and New Hibernia Review. She is co-editor of the short story anthology The Writer’s Torch: Reading Stories from The Bell (Stinging Fly Press, 2023) and of a special issue on mid-twentieth-century Irish cultural and literary landscapes with RISE (Review of Irish Studies in Europe, together with Yen-Chi Wu). She is currently editing The Edinburgh Companion of Irish Literature and Periodical Culture (EUP, 2025) with Elke D’hoker. She holds a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) from Utrecht University specialising in bilingual and international teaching at secondary and upper-secondary level. She worked at Uppsala University and Mid-Sweden University before joining the English Department at Stockholm University.
 
Her research interests include (mid-)twentieth-century (Irish) literature, Irish Studies, periodical culture, short fiction studies, (late) modernism, gender studies, postcolonial theory and radio literature. She has previously taught courses in literary analysis, Anglophone literature, critical theory, composition and proficiency across different levels, and has supervised students working within English literature and literary didactics.
