Ylva Lennartsson Hartmann

About me

I am a doctoral candidate in public international law at Stockholm University’s Faculty of Law. My research focuses on the criminalization of torture at the domestic level and the connected effects on national prosecutions and redress for torture survivors. In my research I look at the interplay between international human rights law, international humanitarian law and international criminal law, as well as their implementation in national legislation and courts. I also conduct research on the position of non-state actors in public international law and feminist legal theory.

Prior to joining Stockholm University, I worked as a Legal Adviser at the International Legal Assistance Consortium (ILAC) in Stockholm where I was in charge of authoring legal assessments in relation to access to justice in North Africa and Latin America. Before joining ILAC, I worked as a Human Rights Adviser at the World Organisation against Torture in Geneva where I worked with monitoring of the implementation of the prohibition against torture at the Asia-desk. I also worked at the Swedish Foundation for Human Rights in Stockholm where I did human rights programming in Cuba, Colombia, Burma and Sweden and acted as the Chair of the Swedish Network for Transitional Justice. I have also worked as a consultant with the International Development Law Organization to develop and test training manuals on human rights for prison personnel. Previously, I have worked as a protection delegate for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Colombia overseeing the implementation of international humanitarian law in the armed conflict. I was also a research analyst at the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention during which I was responsible for evaluating the Swedish government’s action plans in relation to gender-based violence, prostitution and trafficking. 

I hold an LLM in international human rights law and humanitarian law from University Panthéon Assas, Paris 2, France. I have an undergraduate degree (four years) from l’Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Rennes, Sciences Po, France. I am a Junior Fellow of Stockholm’s Centre for International Law and Justice (SCILJ), a member of the Swedish International Law Association and the Swedish section of the International Commission of Jurists.

Criminalization of torture at the domestic level – a victim’s approach

PhD research project that examines how states conceptualize torture in incorporating the crime in national legislation and the resulting effect on national prosecutions and redress for torture survivors, with a focus on European countries.
