Zamokuhle Hopewell MthethwaPhD Student
About me
Zamokuhle Mthethwa is a journalism studies scholar researching the role of journalists in the framing of artificial intelligence (AI) in the global south particularly in Africa and what it means to be responsible, ethical and to pursue the public interest in this context. Formerly a visual communications specialist in the government sector, he is interested in ensuring developments in journalism practice and policy contribute to strengthening public interest journalism.
Mthethwa completed his BA Hons in Journalism at Rhodes University and his MA in Journalism Studies at Södertön University and currently he is pursuing a PhD in Journalism studies at Stockholm University. He has 20 years of media experience contributing to the South African government communications strategy. Working at the nexus of these two very different knowledge production fields, he is motivated by a desire to bridge theory and practice in innovative ways to drive change in the public interest.
Current research interest:
His work is interdisciplinary and goes beyond the interest on the framing of AI in news publications. He has an interest in further exploring how generative AI is impacting journalism and the information ecosystem, the intelligibility of AI systems in newsrooms, how to improve AI literacy among journalists.
