The the Climate and Environmental History Seminar: Landslide Archaeology
Seminar
Date: Wednesday 6 March 2024
Time: 15.00 – 17.00
Location: Department of History room D837, Zoom
Past hazards and disasters in the Göta River Valley and beyond. Anton Larsson, Stockholm University, presents at the Climate and Environmental History Seminar in collaboration with the Medieval seminar. Note the weekday!
Anton Larsson recently finished a PhD in Archaeology, having researched human
entanglements with landslides in the past, present and future.
Landslides have for thousands of years been one of few geohazard event types to occur on a regular basis in what is today Western Sweden. This is due to a potent mix of unstable clay soils and other factors such as precipitation, temperature, vegetation, anthropogenic activity, and more. This talk focuses on a set of landslides, some truly in ancient in date and others that are medieval, which in one way or
another impacted human communities during the Middle Ages. Prominent landslide sites include Råda in inland Västergötland and Jordfallet at Bohus by the Göta River.
Further, the potential utility of landslide deposits for research is discussed.
