Planktonic partnerships, or symbioses, between eukaryotic and prokaryotic plankton that are major players in the Nitrogen and Carbon cycles of the World’s oceans

Our research activities focus on planktonic symbioses between diverse lineages of eukaryotes and bacteria; more recently we have broadened this aspect to include other microbial consortia, including kleptoplasty (temporary acquisition of a plastid from one cell to another). In the team we develop and apply single cell approaches that determine the genetic identity, activity, partner function, and genome content in these understudied but biogeochemically relevant planktonic populations.

Tiny ocean partnership reveals secrets of evolution

The microscopic alliance between algae and bacteria offers rare, step-by-step snapshots of how bacteria lose genes and adapt to increasing host dependence. This is shown by a new study led by researchers from Stockholm University, in collaboration with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and Linnaeus University, published in Current Biology.

Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences

Postdoc Fellowship in Marine Microbiology

A postdoctoral stipend is available with an emphasis on planktonic N2 fixing symbioses. The position is sponsored by the Carl Trygger Foundation to the laboratory of Professor Rachel A Foster at Stockholm University in the Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences. At the Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences, research and teaching are conducted in an international environment. The department has approximately 100 employees, including 25 research groups, 10 postdocs and approximately 35 are PhD students.

Fascinated by phytoplankton

Rachel Foster is professor of microbial oceanography at the Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences. She is one of Stockholm University’s new professors who will be installed at a ceremony in the Stockholm City Hall on September 29.
