Research project Novel uses for compound specific stable isotopes applied to eco-evolutionary and ecotoxicological research

This project focuses on improving the interpretation of stable isotope data in organisms exposed to environmental stress, using Baltic cod as a model species.

Through controlled experiments, we investigate how hypoxia (low oxygen conditions) and food limitation affect cod physiology and overall health status, and how these stressors influence stable isotope signatures. In field studies, variation in isotope composition is often interpreted primarily as a reflection of diet. However, physiological stress may also alter isotope ratios, potentially affecting ecological interpretations. By combining experimental and field-based approaches, the project aims to improve our understanding of how changing environmental conditions have influenced Baltic cod populations and to provide a more accurate framework for interpreting isotope data from wild-caught fish.
