The course will be open to PhD students from diverse academic backgrounds and will address legal and ethical challenges arising from advances in medicine, biotechnology, and digital technologies including AI.
The rapid development of medicine, biotechnology, AI, and digitalisation presents significant challenges for healthcare systems. Addressing these in a legally sound and ethically responsible manner requires expertise in medical law and ethics. Despite growing demand, no doctoral-level course combining medical law and ethics currently exists in Sweden.
This project seeks to fill that gap by developing, in collaboration with Karolinska Institutet, an interdisciplinary doctoral course open to PhD students from law, medicine, public health, ethics, and sociology. Development will proceed through four stages: needs assessment and inter-institutional contact; defining funding and responsibility structures; approval of the course concept; and formal institutional approval with recruitment of staff. The project has received a letter of intent from KI's Ethics Unit and has been nominated for CeUL's Pedagogical Ambassador Programme 2026.
