Research area Special Education

Special education research examines the conditions for participation and learning from societal, organizational, group, and individual perspectives. It focuses on understanding how educational environments can support or hinder development, learning, and socialization among children, young people, and adults.

We investigate how educational settings can promote or limit opportunities for development, learning, and participation. The research also explores how difficulties can be prevented by studying the interaction between individuals and their environments, and by identifying protective and risk factors at different levels for people with disabilities, individuals in socially vulnerable situations, and children and students who require additional support.

Our research draws on a wide range of theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature that characterizes special education as a field of study.

Ethics, Power and Profession

This research area focuses on conceptions and institutional responses regarding human diversity in education and care contexts in particular. Ultimately it is about the kinds of lives that are imposed or made possible for different groups of people through various ethical norms, power structures and professional practices.

This field includes research into activities, strategies and ways of working with learning that improve these activities and strategies and prevent difficulties arising in educational situations, whether in education, in third-cycle education or in the workplace.

This research domain focuses on multiple relationships between migration and education. Migration can affect the education system both indirectly and directly. Indirect impact relates to the consequences for local schools of increases in the number of migrants settling in or being referred to certain residential areas.
