Research project No place for crime?
'No place for crime' is my dissertation project where I study how crime may be 'used' in various ways to define urban space, and how this, by extionsion, creates understandings regarding who has the right to different places in the city.
The project builds on the concept of ”the revanchist city”, which states that since the 1990's cities are governed by notions concerning how some groups are more entitled to the city and urban spaces than other groups. By labeling certain actions and/or groups as 'criminal' in relation to a place, the exclusion of these groups are legitimized. Through this process the place in question and who has the right to it are defined.
In my project I explore how everyday agents may 'use' crime in order to define different urban spaces, and how they in this process also define who has the right to that space. This is done through three cases in and around Stockholm.
