Research project The Swedish Generations and Gender Survey (GGS)

The Swedish Generations and Gender Survey (GGS) is part of an international data infrastructure, the Generations and Gender Programme (GGP). The infrastructure includes a register-linked survey of adults to which a contextual database covering their adult lives is matched.

The GGP’s overarching goal is to provide data infrastructure for improved understanding of the causes and consequences of dramatic declines in fertility and changes in partnership behavior in Europe and other affluent countries. GGP data enable research on life-course decision processes; the role of values in life course choices; persistence and change in the gendered character of the life course; intra- and inter-generational processes in the life course; and improved understanding of the effects of welfare policy in general and policies focused on aging or gender.

The Swedish Generations and Gender Survey was carried out by means of an online (or postal option) questionnaire during 2021. Some data were collected through population registers. A target population of 30,000 individuals aged 18-59 years produced 8,082 respondents (response rate 27%). The field work was carried out by Statistics Sweden. Data from the Swedish GGS will be available through the Generations and Gender Programme website at the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute.

Project description

Questionnaires GGS 2012-13

A previous Swedish Generations and Gender Survey was carried out during 2012-2013 by means of telephone interviews and follow-up postal or online questionnaires. Some data were also collected through population registers. In 2012, a target population of 18,000 individuals aged 18-79 years produced 9,688 respondents (response rate 53.8%). 6,830 respondents also filled out the postal / online follow-up questionnaire. The field work was also carried out by Statistics Sweden. A wave 2 of the Swedish GGS of 2012-2013 was entirely collected from registers and brings data on demographic and other outcomes through 2016.

The attrition rate in this follow-up was zero percent. An aggregated version of the Swedish GGS is available through the Generations and Gender Programme website at the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute: https://www.ggp-i.org/data/.  In this version of the Swedish GGS a number of variables have been aggregated or dropped. The full version of the survey is available to researchers at the Stockholm University Demography Unit through Statistics Sweden’s Micro-Online Access system. Restrictions to use are due to legal constraints.

Here you find the questionnaires used in the GGS project.
