Research subject Digital Games and Simulation
Digital gaming is a growing industry all over the world, and Sweden has a strong position in game development. Research in this area is also growing, incorporating concepts like storytelling, accessibility, believability, co-creation and meaningfulness.
Play is a fundamental human activity that most of won’t give up as we grow older. Playing digital games is entertaining, but it also has many other values. You can learn and develop from games, and they can be social and inclusive.
We study play as a practice in many different contexts, for example around meaningful gaming experiences, how believable characters can be built, and how people with physical, intellectual or other disabilities can have equal access to games.
Simulation is another important part of this research area. One example from research is a social simulation project connected to the COVID-19 pandemic, taking how people actually react and behave into account. The alternative scenarios that are created can provide important input to policymakers.
