Our department's research on the history of consumption, markets, and business encompasses key areas such as marketing, retail, consumer cultures, trade, and specific enterprises.

This includes examining markets for various products and services such as food, clothing, housing, and the cultural industries. By studying how markets have been created, evolved, regulated, and contested; how consumers have been imagined and addressed; as well as how traders and businesses have acted to maintain and expand market shares and influence social change, we explore broad developments across different historical periods.
