Italian philology is the study of literary and non-literary texts written in Italian or in one of the Italian dialects from the Middle Ages to the present.

It is aimed at establishing the textual form closest to the original one through a critical edition. Italian philology is concerned with manuscripts and printed material and with the way texts have been preserved. It also includes the study of original manuscripts and their variants.
