Research subject Journalism, Digital Platforms, and Social Media
Digital platforms have brought about comprehensive changes in both the production and consumption of journalism. Social media platforms have become influential spaces for news consumption, especially among young citizens.
On these platforms, the very concept of “news” is increasingly difficult to define. What is considered journalism, and who can call themselves a journalist, have become more and more unclear as new actors enter the news market. Alternative media, citizen journalism and political media criticism are examples of areas that have become increasingly central within JMK's research. Through digital footprints on social media, new opportunities are created for media houses to measure audience behaviors and for editorial teams to evaluate the effectiveness and influence of their staff. JMK's research addresses the consequences of these new conditions through studies of digital distribution mechanisms, the role of social media in public service organizations, the development of algorithmic news evaluation and analyses of new digital formats within journalism.
