Research subject Global Media Studies
Climate change, conflict, migration, (in)equality and human rights are burning issues in a world where national borders are simultaneously questioned and strengthened. It is not possible to understand this world without studying the communication that is central to it, from both geopolitical and glocal perspectives.
Scholars engaged in global media studies at JMK explore communication as both part of the problem, and the way forward. Our projects concern environmental communication and sustainability; global journalism and cosmopolitanism; critical media geography; communication rights; issues related to justice and solidarity; and activism and mobilisation. Our research addresses who has a voice in public discourse, and where and how different actors can express themselves - regardless of whether they appear in written, audio- or visual-based communication. Within the field of media and communication studies at JMK, there is a long tradition of research on issues related to globalization, and a particular interest in theory. Our scholars also teach on the department’s international Master programme that bears the name of our shared interest: Global Media Studies.
