We research sign language in general and Swedish Sign Language (SSL) in particular. We also examine various aspects of the multilingualism and language learning of the deaf and hard of hearing.

At the Department of Linguistics, we have been researching sign language since the early 1970s. Today our research is mainly about linguistically describing signed languages and in particular Swedish Sign Language (SSL). We examine the language acquisition of deaf children as well as various aspects of multilingualism in deaf and hard of hearing people. We also run the Swedish Sign Language Dictionary.
