Degree projects

Thesis work is a major part of both the bachelor degree and master degree. The thesis allows specialization of the degree and deepening in a theme. At the post-graduate level the thesis for the licentiate and the dissertation for the doctorate are the main parts of the programme. To see what former students have focused their papers on can give a hint of what Human Geography, Urban and Regional Planning and Geography is about, and what fit in these main fields of study.

Degrees

Cartography and GIS

Geographers have always worked with maps. You can study cartography and geographic information systems (GIS) at the bachelor, the master and the doctoral level.

The Department of Human Geography carries out a target-oriented work to promote gender equality, equal rights and opportunities as well as reduce resource consumption, increase the share of environmentally friendly products and increase awareness of environmental issues among staff and students.

Exchange programmes – a chance to study abroad

The Erasmus and Nordplus programmes offer many exchange options for you as a Department of Human Geography student to study at one of our partner institutions abroad. In addition Stockholm University has a lot of bilateral exchange agreements with universities around the globe.

Field studies

Excursions, fieldwork and field courses are fundamental components of education and almost all courses contain some sort of field visit.

Meet leading researchers

As a student in the Department of Human Geography you will meet leading researchers and teachers in historical geography and landscape, population and gender geography, economic geography, geographic information system (GIS) and cartography, urban and regional planning, urban geography and development geography. You will study people's varied ways of living, thinking, planning, travel and work. You will learn to deal with the challenges of the future, gain knowledge of living conditions around the world and work with the concepts and techniques you need to understand contexts and see patterns.

Resources

Resources for students includs rooms for team work, social and informal learning areas, libraries, wireless network, language support, University IT account and University card, and more.

Schedules

Student life

In this section there is information about geography and planning associations, costs and funding, crisis and security, assistance for students with disabilities, health service, housing, insurance, student union, visa and residence permit etc.

Work after graduation

Our courses and programmes offer knowledge and skills to work with a variety of issues. They can include housing, economic growth, heritage protection, land use, environment, urban and regional planning, social and ethnic segregation, urban and regional development, transport and tourism. Human Geography is a key area for those who want a social science education for work in the analysis, management, planning and communication. The training in Urban and Regional Planning is focused on work in the various themes in both urban and regional development. A Geography education prepares for work on environmental and social issues from both a scientific and a social science perspective. These works can include local, national or international issues and relations.

Work experience and projects on assignment

Work experience and projects on assignment give students the chance to apply knowledge and skills from more theoretical courses, gain insight into working life and become more employable.
