Dugald Murdoch är född i Glasgow, Skottland, och var student på Glasgow universitet, Uppsala universitet, och Oxford universitet.  Han har ett M.A. examen i filosofi och engelska språket och litteratur från Glasgow universitet, och ett B.Phil. examen och D.Phil. examen i filosofi från Oxford universitet.  Han föreläste i filosofi på University of Canterbury i Nya Zeeland innan han kom till Stockholms universitet.  Han är nu Professor Emeritus i teoretisk filosofi.
