Mønter udgives af en møntherre efter officiel beslutning. Det indebærer, at de kan dateres og stedfæstes mere præcist end de fleste andre arkæologiske genstande. Mønter er præget i millionvis og bevaret i 100.000-vis. De er samtidigt brugsgenstande for store dele af befolkningen og en del af det sociale og økonomiske samfundsliv. Mønternes motiv og indskrift gav møntherren mulighed for at få politiske eller religiøse budskaber vidt omkring.

Mønter er således et massemateriale i krydsfeltet mellem magten og folket. De har et stort potentiale som kildemateriale til fortidens sociale, politiske, kulturelle, administrative og økonomiske historie – især for perioder med få skriftlige kilder såsom vikingetiden og tidlig middelalder.

Med dette udgangspunkt forsker jeg i mønter og møntbrug i vikingetid og middelalder i Frankrig, England og Skandinavien. Jeg har været specielt optaget af de metodiske aspekter af møntfund som kilde til møntbrug og møntproduktion samt numismatikkens placering i forhold til arkæologi og historie.

Pågående projekt

CNS-projektet (Corpus Nummorum Saeculorum IX-XI qui in Suecia reperti sunt) har til formål at publicere svenske møntfund fra vikingetiden. Dette fundmateriale er blandt de største og bedst dokumenterede i verden og udgør et enestående kildemateriale til vikingetidens samfundsforhold og økonomi.

I samarbejde med IRAMAT i Orléans, Frankrig forbereder jeg en monografi om Normandiets mønter i 900-tallet. Det er perioden, hvor vikingehøvdingen Rolf af den frankiske konge får Normandiet som len. Hans efterfølgeres møntvæsen er imidlertid i ren frankisk, ikke i skandinavisk tradition. Det er yderst velorganiseret og må have krævet et administrativt apparat for at fungere. Meget tyder på, at møntvæsenet var indrettet med henblik på at give maksimal indtægt til møntherren.

I samarbejde med Nationalmuseet, København, og Museum Vestsjælland undersøger jeg brugen af mønter på landet i middelalderen. I Danmark har der i 40 år været et tæt samarbejde mellem arkæologer og metaldetektorbrugere, og resultatet er 1000-vis af fund. Således er der nu fremkommet så mange mønter i ruralt miljø, at man må konkludere, at bønder må have benyttet mønter i stor udstrækning allerede fra 1200-tallet og frem.
