OLED screens are known for their exceptional colour rendering, slim profile and versatility, giving rise to both foldable phone screens and transparent TVs. In the last decade, OLED has become a household name yet few know what the acronym stands for. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are based on small organic molecules that become fluorescent when exposed to an electric current, almost like glow-in-the-dark toys, when exposed to light. The project focuses on the design and development of new, sustainable organic molecules with this property, to be used in next-generation OLED screens. Screens free from unethically sourced and rare heavy metals, that are more efficient, requiring less energy to operate and perform just as well, if not better, than the best screens available on the market today.
