Connecting L1 and L2 teaching: The case of Arabic and Finnish as a second language

The connection between L1 and L2 is complex both cognitively and from a cultural perspective. Maria Ahlholm will show some results from the fresh Migdia data and ask, how and why the schools could and should support first language skills.

Maria Ahlholm is an associate professor and senior lecturer in the University of Helsinki, Faculty of Education. Her research themes are Finnish as second language learning, multilingualism and language-aware pedagogy, especially of newly arrived learners.

In project Migdia (Migration, transnational educational paths, and diasporic plurilingualism), she observes with her colleagues Arabic students attending heritage language classes, and their second language (Finnish) learning.

Maria Ahlholm is also part of a Nordic QUICC team, which compares different Nordic school systems' ways of including the newcomers.
