Biological research at Stockholm University takes place at the section's three research departments, which study life in all it forms from the molecular components, to the global ecosystems. It is professors, senior lecturers and doctoral students at these research departments who conduct the teaching that is administered by us at the Department of Biology Education. We also have teachers from the Stockholm Resilience Center and the Swedish Museum of Natural History.
Creating controlled mini-ecosystems, called mesocosms, is one way for researchers to study factors that influence processes in the sea. This summer, a large experiment of this kind was conducted at the Askö Laboratory, to investigate how emissions of greenhouse gases from shallow coastal bays are affected by global warming and by animal communities in the water and sediment.
With bloated bellies and hairy legs, female flies try to look bigger to get food from courting mates. But male flies, in turn, have sharpened their eyesight to call their bluff. A new study by researchers from the Universities of Gothenburg and Stockholm suggests that this is an ongoing evolution where both sexes try to outsmart each other.
