Environment and Society in Taiwan
Taiwan is an island country with varied landscape, diverse cultures, and incredibly rich biodiversity. This talk will broadly introduce the environmental transformation that Taiwan has experienced in the past few decades and the contemporary environmental challenges Taiwan currently deals with. We will cover topics such conservation, recycling, pollution, waste management, and land use conflicts, as well as global climate change. Throughout the talk, we will touch upon how colonial legacy, development states, industrialization, and democratization shape the relations between people and the environment.
John Chung-En Liu is an associate professor of sociology at National Taiwan University. Previously, he was an assistant professor at Occidental College in Los Angeles and a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School. Liu's research uses sociological perspectives to study climate change and various environmental issues. His work was published in various academic journals and featured in media outlets such as Foreign Policy, Guardian, and Public Radio International.
