PhD student in economics awarded scholarships for research projects
Marie Kaul, a PhD student in economics at Stockholm University, has been awarded a total of SEK 240,000 from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences to support two different projects.

I hope the insights from this study can inform policymakers on how to effectively support victims of domestic violence
The first project examines how high housing costs prevent victims of domestic violence from leaving abusive relationships. The grant of SEK 140,000 will help link Swedish population data with information on housing costs, hospitalizations, and police reports.
”I hope the insights from this study can inform policymakers on how to effectively support victims of domestic violence, and whether housing constraints play a role,” Marie Kaul says.
In the second project, the researchers study how censorship in the early U.S. film industry shaped people’s beliefs and life choices. A national film censorship system was introduced in 1934, but before that, the film industry engaged with more challenging themes such as infidelity, violence, and women rejecting traditional gender roles.
”We examine how this sudden shift in film content influenced later-life outcomes – such as marriage, fertility, and migration decisions – among children exposed to censored versus uncensored material,” Kaul explains. The project receives SEK 100,000 in funding.
Marie Kaul is in her second year of the PhD program in Economics at Stockholm University. Her research interests include urban, gender, and public economics.
