Climate and Environmental History Seminar: Dendrochronology: The history within a tree
Seminar
Date: Wednesday 18 September 2024
Time: 15.00 – 17.00
Location: Department of History
Paul J. Krusic, Stockholm University, presents at the seminar.
Paul J. Krusic will speak on the challenges and success of using tree-ring data to reconstruct past environmental histories that have had societal impact. Beginning with the origins of the science of dendrochronology, to the present-day challenges of understanding the scale and scope of anthropogenic climate change, Paul will share his experiences of how he and others, who study the annual variations of tree growth around the world, apply their findings to reveal the nexus between climate and society. Where do such trees and forests exist and how does one recover the environmental histories encoded in their growth rings? These are just some of the questions he will endeavour to answer.
Paul J. Krusic began his career in the United States as a forester working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the United States Forest Service. Krusic has since he became introduced to the science of dendrochronology in the 1980s worked for over 40 years at many prestigious institutions around the world, including Columbia University, University of Cambridge and Stockholm University within the field of dendroclimatology.
The seminar takes place at the Department of History, Stockholm University, and through Zoom.
