Finding housing on the private market

The Housing Office at Stockholm University provides housing to international students and researchers at Stockholm University. However, there is no housing guarantee and due to a shortage of housing in Stockholm, the majority of staff and students need to find housing on the private rental market.

Finding housing on the private market can be hard and takes time. With effort, most students and researchers find housing after a while. Advice that may be useful for your housing search can be found on this page.

At the website Study in Sweden you can find advice on private housing and how to plan a budget in Sweden.

Location

Stockholm is well-connected by an efficient public transportation system, making commuting easy. While many prioritize finding accommodation close to the university, expanding your search to areas with good transport links can make it both easier and more affordable to find a room. Considering a broader range of locations significantly increases your chances of securing suitable housing.

Sublease

Many young people in Stockholm rely on sublease market for housing. It is a great way to find accommodation quickly. However, it can also be a challenge to find something affordable, safe and lasting. There are several websites with private advertisements and different groups on social media to team up with other students to find housing.

We recommend searching for housing via legitimate websites such as Akademisk kvart. This website contains private housing advertisements aimed at students.

When searching for housing on the private rental market it is important to be cautious of potential scams. To minimize risks, follow these guidelines:

Only pay in advance if you are using a trusted real estate agency or after signing a written lease agreement and visiting the apartment in person.

Warning signs of scams

Be alert to the following red flags:

  • The landlord claims to be abroad and cannot show the apartment in person. Scammers often request deposits in advance, but legitimate landlords renting in Sweden can usually show the apartment.
  • The landlord only has a foreign bank account or asks you to pay to someone else in another country. Scammers often demand large deposits via Western Union or other foreign bank transfers. Legitimate landlords typically use a Swedish bank account.
  • The landlord does not provide their full name and personal details, such as a Swedish personal identity number.
  • The landlord pressures you to pay quickly to “secure the deal.”

How to protect yourself

To reduce the risk of scams, take the following precautions before signing a lease and making any payments:

  1. Verify the landlord’s identity – Request their full name, address, and Swedish personal identity number. Use websites like Eniro or Hitta to confirm their details.
  2. Check the apartment address online to ensure it exists.
  3. Ask for a copy of a permission letter allowing the landlord to sublet the apartment. This document should include the property owner’s contact details. Contact the property owner to verify this permission. (Note: No permission is needed to rent out a room if the landlord is also living in the apartment.)
  4. Visit the apartment in person. If this is not possible, request a real-time video tour to confirm its legitimacy.

Reporting scams

If you suspect fraud, report it immediately to the Swedish Police.
